Sweaters are back in rotation, and this is the kind of trip where dinner is the main event, not the afterthought.
Three days across seven historic German villages tucked into the Iowa River Valley, built by a 19th-century communal society that's still known today for two things: family-style German cooking, and wine that's sweeter than anything you've probably had before. This is a slower kind of trip — good food, good walking, and a genuinely different slice of American history hiding in the middle of Iowa.
Your Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive and settle into Amana proper.
Check into a bed & breakfast or inn right in the village of Amana
Eat dinner family-style at the Ox Yoke Inn, open since 1940 — expect refillable side dishes, sauerbraten, and a table full of strangers who'll feel like friends by dessert
Walk off dinner along Main Street before turning in for the night
Day 2 — Wine, wool, and the whole point of the trip.
Tour the Amana Woolen Mill to see one of the last working woolen mills in the country
Spend the afternoon wine tasting — try Fireside Winery or the Village Winery, and don't skip the rhubarb or dandelion wine, both genuine Amana traditions most visitors have never heard of
Grab a beer flight at Millstream Brewing, Iowa's first microbrewery, if wine's not your thing
Day 3 — The communal kitchen and one last walk before heading home.
Visit the Amana Heritage Museum to learn how the whole colony ran on shared, communal kitchens instead of individual family stoves
Walk or bike a stretch of the Kolonieweg Trail along the Iowa River before you go
Grab pastries and coffee at Amana Colonies Bakery & Café for the road
