90 waterfalls, one town, zero reasons to leave
Four days based out of Hood River, right where the Columbia Gorge cuts through the Cascades — dramatic basalt cliffs, dozens of named waterfalls within a short drive, and a small town at the center of it that's just as known for orchards and breweries as it is for trails. This is the outdoorsy trip: less driving between stops, more actual time on foot as a family.
Your Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive in Hood River and get oriented.
Check into a spot along the Hood River waterfront, walking distance to downtown restaurants
Walk down to the Event Site to watch the windsurfers and kiteboarders — the Gorge is one of the best wind-sports spots in the country, and it's a genuine spectacle even if you're not the one on the water
Grab dinner downtown before an early night — tomorrow's a hiking day
Day 2 — Waterfall hopping along the Historic Columbia River Highway.
Start at Multnomah Falls, the second-tallest year-round waterfall in the country — go early, since parking fills fast and a timed-entry reservation is required in peak season
Walk the short, flat trail to Bridal Veil Falls — one of the easiest, most rewarding stops in the whole Gorge
Let the kids play in the creek at Wahkeena Falls, where the water barely reaches ankle-deep
Day 3 — A real hike, with a swimming hole at the end.
Hike the Wahclella Falls Trail — an easy-to-moderate 2-mile round trip through a narrow canyon that ends at a 350-foot, two-tiered waterfall most visitors have never heard of
Pack a swimsuit — several spots along the trail are calm enough for a cooldown swim
Eat dinner back in Hood River, at one of the breweries downtown if the adults want to unwind
Day 4 — Drive the Hood River Fruit Loop before heading home.
Spend the morning on the Hood River Fruit Loop, a scenic drive past orchards, U-pick farms, and fruit stands with Mt. Hood as the backdrop
Stop for cider or fresh fruit at one of the farm stands along the way — a genuinely local tradition most people driving through never plan for
However your family likes to move outdoors — waterfall-chasing or trail-hiking — hit reply and tell me what's calling your name this fall.
