Sweaters on, harbor's foggy, let's talk Cape Ann.

Four days split between two small towns on Massachusetts's North Shore — one a postcard-perfect fishing village, the other one of the oldest towns in the country with a food specialty most people have never heard of. This is New England at its quietest and most photogenic, with just enough odd little discoveries along the way to make it memorable.

Your Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive in Rockport and wander Bearskin Neck.

  • Walk Bearskin Neck, the harbor peninsula packed with art galleries and shops

  • Snap a photo of Motif No. 1, the famous red fishing shack that's been painted more than almost any building in America

  • Grab a lobster roll at Roy Moore's

Day 2 — Rocky coastline and quiet views.

  • Spend the morning at Halibut Point State Park — old granite quarries, tide pools, and sweeping ocean views with almost no crowds

  • Browse the galleries around Main Street and Bearskin Neck at a slower pace

  • Eat dinner back on the harbor before heading in for the night

Day 3 — Drive to Ipswich for the clams and the marsh.

  • Head to Crane Beach — dramatic dunes backed by the Great Marsh, one of the largest salt marshes in New England

  • Eat fried whole-belly clams at a local spot — Ipswich is considered the birthplace of the fried clam, and the whole-belly version (not just the strips) is the thing to order here

  • Take an easy walk or kayak through the marsh if the tide's right

Day 4 — Wolves before you head home.

  • Visit Wolf Hollow, a real wolf sanctuary in Ipswich where you can watch an actual pack up close — genuinely not something you'd expect to find in small-town Massachusetts

  • Grab breakfast in town before the drive back

Foggy harbors, whole-belly clams, and actual wolves — hit reply and tell me what odd little detail like this has stuck with you from a trip of your own.
