Three days on a Wisconsin peninsula most people outside the Midwest have never heard of, and it might be the coziest trip we've covered yet. Limestone cliffs, five lighthouses, water on both sides of a two-lane highway, and just enough small-town charm that nobody's rushing anywhere. This is the trip for the family that wants fall to actually feel like fall.
Your Itinerary + Route
Day 1 — Arrive and get your first taste of the peninsula.
Check into a cottage or inn in Fish Creek or Ephraim — both are central and walkable
Grab dinner at Wilson's Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim, a Door County institution since 1906
Drive a stretch of Highway 42 at golden hour — the coastal views are worth the slow pace
Day 2 — Climb a tower, then eat like a local.
Hike Peninsula State Park and climb Eagle Tower for a sweeping view over the treetops and islands
Stop at a farm stand along the coastal highway for fresh apple cider and warm pastries
Eat at Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay — yes, there really are goats grazing on the sod roof
Day 3 — Lighthouses, orchards, and one last drive before heading home.
Visit Cana Island Lighthouse — a short walk (or wade, depending on water levels) out to a working 1869 lighthouse
Pick apples at a local orchard like Seaquist Orchards
Try a traditional Door County fish boil for lunch before you go — a genuinely local tradition most visitors never know to look for
However you take your fall — cider in hand or camera out the window — hit reply and tell me what's on your list this season.
