Alarm's set before sunrise, and for once, everyone in the family will actually get up for it.

Four days in Albuquerque, timed around the world's largest hot air balloon festival — running October 3–11, 2026 this year — where hundreds of balloons lift off at once over high desert, all before most people have had coffee. Pair that with New Mexico's green chile scene, which isn't just a food trend here, it's basically a cultural identity (order anything "Christmas style" and you'll get both red and green chile, no judgment). This is landscape and food working together in a way most fall trips don't pull off.

Your Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive and catch an evening Balloon Glow.

  • Check into a hotel near Old Town — walkable, central, and close to the festival park

  • Head to Balloon Fiesta Park for an evening Balloon Glow session — balloons lit up from the inside after dark, without the pre-dawn wake-up call

Day 2 — Set an alarm for Dawn Patrol and the Mass Ascension.

  • Get to Balloon Fiesta Park before sunrise for Dawn Patrol, followed by the Mass Ascension — hundreds of balloons launching in waves as the sky lights up

  • Warm up afterward with a green chile stew at a local Old Town spot — this is the dish to build the whole morning around

Day 3 — Old Town and the Sandia Peak Tramway.

  • Wander Old Town Albuquerque's adobe architecture, galleries, and shops

  • Ride the Sandia Peak Tramway — one of the longest aerial trams in the world, with sweeping views over the whole Rio Grande valley

  • Order a green chile cheeseburger for dinner — a New Mexico classic worth building a whole meal around

Day 4 — One last chile fix before heading home.

  • Grab breakfast burritos smothered in green chile before the flight home — a proper send-off

Balloons or burritos — which one's got you more convinced? Hit reply and tell me.
